Giving Back to the Community
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor young people in middle level and high school grades for outstanding volunteer service to their communities. Created in 1995 by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the awards constitute the United States' largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteering. Over the past 12 years, the program has honored more than 75,000 young volunteers at the local, state, and national level.
Prudential Real Estate Affiliates, Inc. adopted The Sunshine Kids as a network-wide charity in 1991. The Sunshine Kids Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to children with cancer. Established in 1982 the Foundation is committed to providing quality group activities and emotional support for Kids who are receiving cancer treatments in hospitals across North America.
The Brokers, Managers and Sales Professionals of Prudential Real Estate understand that life can be unfair and that "time is often the greatest enemy of a child who has cancer." The Sunshine Kids mission, with the support of Prudential Real Estate, is to "…provide exciting, positive group activities for children with cancer, so they may once again do what Kids are meant to do…have fun and celebrate life!"
Prudential's Global Volunteer Day, originated out of Prudential's Local Initiatives area, which coordinates volunteer efforts by Prudential employees and the Prudential Real Estate Affiliates that are working to address needs in specific communities. The first company-wide Volunteer Day was held on October 28, 1995. Starting that year with 5,000 employees participating in 100 projects, the daylong event has enjoyed substantial growth and now includes the participation of nearly 34,000 participants at about 900 projects in more than 15 countries.
Global Volunteer Day is shaped by employee interest. Prudential Financial has found that its employees prefer to independently identify the partner organizations or issues that will be the focus of their volunteer efforts. As a result, Global Volunteer Day is one of the most diverse and personally engaging corporate volunteerism programs in existence-with projects ranging from building homes to tutoring students, running in marathons, collecting clothes, and feeding the homeless.
